Dear all,
I'm getting in touch from The Photographers' Gallery, a not for profit
gallery that was established in the early seventies and remains the UK's
primary public gallery dedicated to photography. We are working on a
large scale portrait commission entitled 'The World in London'. The main
premise is that we are commissioning 205 photographic portraits of
Londoners who were born in the participating nations of the Olympics.
The project is a large-scale, public portraiture project timed to
coincide with the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The project aims to
celebrate the diversity of London's population and of photographic
portraiture and is supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. With
205 different nations competing in the 2012 Olympics, the project will
feature 205 portrait photographs of 205 Londoners (one from each nation)
by 205 UK and international photographers. The final images will be
exhibited as a public art project across London during 2012.
The South African photographer, Pieter Hugo, is in London this week to
make a portrait of a Rwandan sitter, and we haven't had any luck so far
identifying a sitter who was born in Rwanda, lives in London. We're
wondering if you could help us in any way with this search. Pieter Hugo
is a very prominent photographer who photographed the "marks" left in
the Rwanda 10 years after the 1994 civil war. The sitting would most
likely take up no more than a few hours of someone's time- the sitter
will not be paid, but will get to be a part of this ambitious project
and get their photograph taken by Pieter.
As I have explained, we have an urgency to find this Rwandan sitter, as
Pieter is in London this week, but we are also looking for sitters from
other nationalities such as Gabon, Haiti, Liberia, Syria, among others.
Many thanks for all your support, I look forward to hearing from you.
