PhD bursary in Social Ethics
An opportunity for fully-funded full-time PhD research is available within the Social Ethics Research Group (SERG) at the University of Wales, Newport – start date, September 2011. Key to the group's interests is the application of political, ethical and social philosophy to issues of pressing contemporary social concern.
Specialist interests of the group include:
- equality
- disability
- democracy
- well-being and social justice
- human rights
- multiculturalism
- legitimacy and authority
- environmental ethics
- global/international ethics
Bursary value: £13,290 p.a. + tuition fees waiver (full time, 3 years; full waiver for EU students only)
Applicants must have a first degree in a subject area relevant to their proposed topic, with a broad knowledge of philosophy and/or political theory and a Master's-level qualification being strongly desirable.

About the Newport Social Ethics Research Group
The Newport Social Ethics Research Group (SERG) combines research and teaching in a range of fields in the social domain, with special emphasis on political, social and ethical theory – and on the points of intersection between these areas. At the heart of the Group’s concerns is the aim of bringing theoretical debates and developments to bear on contemporary social trends, policies and controversies. As well as pursuing individual research, members of the group have recently been involved in collaborative research projects funded by external bodies such as the ESRC, AHRC, HEFCW and the European Commission.
