APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING
Dear Dis-Forum
I have a student who is a powered wheelchair user, and is hoping to transfer from her current course to one which includes a compulsory year studying abroad at a Japanese university. Initial enquiries made seem to show that Japanese universities may be unable to accept her unless she has 24/7 personal assistant support, for reasons related to the Japanese cultural system, irrespective of her individual disability related needs.
Do any of you have any experience of a disabled student, especially wheelchair users, who have attempted/succeeded a study abroad placement in Japan? Did you encounter similar barriers? Any advice would be gratefully received!
Please feel free to reply on or off list.
Kind regards
