Dear list members,
The following may be of interest to students wishing to study the
international drugs trade in SE Asia at Ph.D level:
Grasping the Links in the Chain: Understanding the Unintended Consequences
of International Counter-Narcotics Measures for the UK
The question of coordinating international counter-narcotics policy, as
well as understanding both the unforeseen side affects of such policy, and
the role played by trans-national networks within it, remains a topic of
considerable concern, not least for the UNODC and SOCA (the UK Serious
Organised Crime Agency).
The project aims both to increase understanding of the web of
trans-national networks and issues involved in general, and also inform UK
public policy in relation to drug control policy.
The research will analyse three distinct but inter-related issues:
1. the history of drug production and counter-narcotics policy, building
on the work of scholars like Pierre Chouvy and Alfred W. McCoy;
2. develop understanding of the effects of counter-narcotics policy in
transit countries between sources in SE Asia or Latin America and the UK
in particular; and
3. understand the effectiveness or not of UK counter-narcotic policies at
the point at which illicit drugs enter the UK market.
