PhD Studentship: Evaluating Mutual Engagement through New Musical Interfaces
Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship to undertake research
into Evaluating Mutual Engagement through New Collaborative Musical
Interfaces, starting September 2011. Whilst research into designing
New Interfaces for Musical Expression has become a research field in
its own right, there are still very few reliable methods and
approaches to evaluating people's engagement with these interfaces,
let alone understanding their mutual engagement with each other. This
is a major problem in the field which hampers our ability to
understand and inform the design of future musical interfaces. The PhD
project would involve designing novel music making devices for
multiple participants, and developing suitable evaluation frameworks
and methodologies based on existing research in Mutual Engagement,
HCI, Interactive Art, and User Experience.
This position, under the supervision of Dr. Nick Bryan-Kinns
(www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~nickbk), is funded by a Queen Mary Doctoral
Training Account. The successful candidate will be based in the
Interactional Sound and Music Group (ISAM) led by Dr. Nick
Bryan-Kinns. ISAM explores new ways of encountering sound from
interactive art to real time data sonification, and is part of the
Centre for Digital Music (www.elec.qmul.ac.uk/digitalmusic/) in the
School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary
University of London. Candidates should have a first or upper second
honours degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Electronic
Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field, and be able to
demonstrate strong analytical skills as well as a keen interest in New
Interfaces for Musical Expression. Good programming skills are also
required.
The studentship will cover student fees and a tax-free stipend
starting at £15,590 per annum and is available to candidates of all
nationalities.
Informal enquiries can be made by email to Dr. Nick Bryan-Kinns:
