deadline for international students is 15th June 2011, while
applications by German students will be accepted until 30th September

MA HEALTH AND SOCIETY IN SOUTH ASIA
In April 2008 the South Asia Institute initiated Health and Society in
South Asia, its first interdisciplinary Master's course. Graduates of
the first cohort of students obtained jobs as Assistant Professor
(Bangladesh); in the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed,
Dhaka, Bangladesh; with the International Red Cross, India and
Pakistan; with Aerzte Ohne Grenzen (Doctors Without Borders), Germany;
GTZ (the German Development Organization), Nepal; and Clinic
Supervisor, India. The second cohort began in April 2010 and includes
students from Bangladesh, Chile, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Pakistan, the
United Kingdom and Slovenia. The third cohort will begin their studies
in October 2011.
The proposed Master?s program is an English-medium, two-year,
interdisciplinary degree with a focus on Medical Anthropology and
South Asian Studies.

MA HEALTH AND SOCIETY IN SOUTH ASIA
_Content_
The proposed Masters Degree Health and Society in South Asia is an
English-medium, two-year, taught interdisciplinary degree with a focus
on Medical Anthropology and South Asian Studies. We give particular
attention to the importance of cultural and historical factors in the
areas of health and illness.
Our current research focus is on indigenous medical systems of South
Asia (e.g. Ayurveda,
Tibetan Medicine, and Folk Medicine), ritual healing, health and
environment, medical tourism, public health, reproductive health and
mental health in South Asia.
The first semester consists of the following core modules:
Introduction to Medical Anthropology
Systems of Healing in South Asia
Methods in Medical Anthropology
Students can further choose between a variety of further options
focusing on South Asia
and Medical Anthropology. We put great emphasis on teaching students
presentation skills,
and offer an optional module in Academic English. We encourage
students to base their
Master's Thesis on a short fieldwork in South Asia, however it can be
also based on literary research. Students are also obliged to learn
one South Asian language
_Who is the course aimed at?_
-- students who plan to work (or who are already employed) in
health-related fields
-- students wishing to pursue an academic career in anthropology or one of the
neighbouring social sciences
_Why Heidelberg?_
The South Asia Institute in Heidelberg is Europe's leading centre for
teaching and
research in and about South Asia. We offer an interdisciplinary

of Ethnology allows students to benefit from the expertise and the
resources to be found there.
_Fees_
The current fees for students at the University of Heidelberg are
606,50? each term.
_What do you need to know and how can you apply?_
Successful applicants should hold a Bachelor degree in a
health-oriented discipline or in
a discipline from the fields of social sciences, cultural or regional
studies. Candidates
not fully meeting these criteria may nevertheless be considered.
Students whose first
language is not English must have IELTS of at least 6.5 or TOEFL or
equivalent.

- If you have not completed your (bachelor?s) studies by the end of
the application period, it is sufficient to hand in a preliminary
certificate of your current higher education institution on the credit
you have completed so far (Transcript of Records). Your higher
education institution must also certify that your current study
program is expected to be completed by the beginning of the semester
you have applied for at Heidelberg University.

original, including a certified translation into German, English or
French.
