I think redeployment of the pregnanat worker is the most pragmatic thing
to do. On the issue re occupational asthma - do you need to consider
what the spores/fungus emanate from? Would think that the opinion of a
good occupational hygienist would be useful......

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] fungal spores and pregnancy
Dear All,
I have a very interesting case involving a pregnant staff member working
occassionally in an area that has been identified as having mould and
fungal spores in high number (do not have specific figures and H&S say
the report has been 'lost'). My client has googled this topic and there
is a plethora if anecdotal evidence about risks to the foetus.
I know that potato moulds can induce labour, and the only research I
have found so far is from 2003 which states no risk to humans, only
evidence of damage to foetus in mice and rats (as well as 2009
information leaflet - stating same thing: Centres for Diseae Control &
Prevention USA).
my advice to the manager concerned is to find another location for this
person to work in as they have previous h/o miscarriage and the anxiety
and stress this is causing is likely to cause more harm than the spores.
the H&S have told the staff member that there is a risk on inhalation of
spores damaging the foetus, but they have subsequently denied giving
this information.
there are also other staff members from the same building suing for
alleged occupational asthma from the spores.
Any other information or opinions?
thanks,
Tracy Huguenel
