Cancer Group, MRC Clinical Trials Unit
Medical Statisticians
Salary in range £24,176 - £25,402 (Band 5) £30,124- £31,725 (Band 4) per annum, inclusive
The MRC Clinical Trials Unit is an international centre of excellence for clinical trials and associated research, taking trials from initial ideas and design, through conduct and analysis, to final publication and dissemination of results. The major focus is on large, international, phase III randomised trials. Over 30 statisticians and epidemiologists are employed across the unit's three clinical areas (cancer, HIV and other diseases).
We currently have a vacancy in the Cancer Group for statistician with or without previous experience in clinical trials. The majority of the Cancer Group's work involves the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials, covering many different types of cancer. Our trials aim to compare treatments by looking at survival, recurrence, side effects and quality of life, and statisticians are key members of the trial teams that develop, run and analyse the trials. The vacancy provides exciting opportunities to make important contributions to clinical research, and if appropriate, to collaborate on methodological research projects across the unit's activities.
All candidates should have a post-graduate qualification in medical statistics or a closely related subject and experience of managing a discrete analysis project largely unsupervised. Excellent organisational and communication skills are expected, as well as the ability to work effectively within a team comprising senior statisticians/scientists, trial managers and data managers. The successful applicant, while gaining experience in all stages of clinical trials development and management, would be responsible for interim and final analyses of ongoing clinical trials, under the direction of a senior statistician. Candidates with 2-3 years relevant experience would be considered for appointment to MRC band 4. They will assume a key role in several trial teams, take primary responsibility for analysis plans, interim and final analyses, and will develop expertise in study design and grant application writing.
Salary is dependent on previous experience and includes Location Allowance and Central London Supplement. Benefits include 30 days annual leave per year, a contributory pension scheme and an interest free season ticket loan. The post is available immediately.
