Job Description
The position is to work as postdoctoral researcher in the field of sport studies within the School of Applied Social Sciences. The researcher will undertake research in collaboration with, and offer support to, Professor Richard Giulianotti, the Head of School. The specific fields of research will be sport mega-events, the sport for development and peace sector, and sport social movements. The researcher will be required to take a lead role in a mixture of tasks which include research planning and administration, data-gathering, grant writing, writing up of papers, and conference preparation. The contract is fixed for 12 months.
Requirements
A strong knowledge of the sociology of sport is essential, with particular reference to research into sport mega-events, and the sport for development and peace sector. Knowledge of research into sport supporter movements is highly desirable. A familiarity with research networks in these fields is highly desirable
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be expected to conduct high-quality collaborative research in the sociology of sport. The researcher will take a lead role in the following tasks:
•Research preparation and administration, such as organising research interviews and meetings, and working with a range of external academic partners to co-ordinate journal special issues.
•Data collection, notably in regard to the compilation of documents and reports.
•The development of high-quality grant applications to key funding agencies.
•The writing up of research for wider dissemination, notably through co-authored articles for publication in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
•Working autonomously to plan the organisation of an international conference.
The researcher will be adaptable and flexible, in terms of collaborating with Professor Giulianotti to respond effectively to new opportunities within the research field of sport studies.
Person Specification
The successful applicant must have, or be near to completion of, a PhD in the sociology of sport. The researcher will have a good knowledge of sociological research into sport mega-events and the sport for development and peace sector. Knowledge of research into sport supporter movements is highly desirable. A familiarity with research networks in these fields is highly desirable.
