Events next weekend (March 12 & 13):
Mêtis - Matthew Sansom, multichannel sound performance/installation
St Mary's Church, Quarry Street, Guildford, UK. Saturday March 12th, 12 noon - 6pm, free entry
A durational performance, by sound artist Matthew Sansom, throughout afternoon in the space of Guildford’s oldest and most atmospheric church. Using field recordings made in and around Guildford, this immersive work invites you to lose yourself in familiar sounds and noises as they are transformed into a sustained and meditative sound collage. You are invited to come and listen and take in the ambience freely at any time between 12 and 6pm. Stay for as long or as little as you like.
Through the process of sustained and expansive listening and subtle changes to familiar and recognisable sound worlds (through repetition, slight transformations, and enveloping stillness) Mêtis awakens the inward terrains of perception and raises questions about the ways sound is experienced in the world and the aesthetic basis for such experiences.
“Mêtis is the particular quality of intense alertness that can be effortlessly aware of everything at once… Mêtis feels, listens, watches … It misses nothing… Mêtis is the encircler; the completer of the circle; the awareness that allows us at any moment, in spite of the raging torrent of appearances, to connect the beginning to the end.” (Peter Kingsley)
