Case Study
I observed a 2½ year old boy and decided to let them run up the stairs: something which their mother does not allow them to do.
I have considered all ethical reasons such as how the relationship between mother and son could be broken up by myself allowing the child to run up the stairs after mum said no. Another ethical reason I came across was causing injuries to the child; by allowing them to run up the stairs may cause injury to them if they fall.
I resolved problems like this by the mother watching the child to run up the stairs the first time to show it is safe so the relationship wasn't broken. I also resolved the issue of the child receiving major injuries if they fell down the stairs by putting cushions at the bottom.
As mum observed the child run up the stairs first time, the child was waiting to be told 'no' by mum because mum does not usually allow it. However, once this was approved by mum and mum walked off, the child became more confident in running up the stairs each time.
Mum does not allow child to run up the stairs usually because she believes it is unsafe for the child to go up the stairs alone.
I believe my case study ties in with Adlers family therapy as I can make mum believe that running up the stairs is safe for the child. Mum could also allow their child to go up and down the stairs on their own by allowing them to sit on their bottom.
What do you make of my observation in your professional opinion?
