Your suggestion of Helen Bee’s book on development is extremely helpful and just what I needed - I will use this to find out how a boy of that age should be developing. I read an article last week about how Clinician’s use ‘norm referencing’ and it mentioned personality tests focus on norm-referenced interpretation - comparison of children’s scores to some standard or norm, usually compared to those of children the same age so it will be useful to see what is said about the average 5 year old. I also read that that the most common reason for the referral of a child, for psychological evaluation, is due to a parent or teacher believing the behaviour to be out of the ordinary or not normal. I agree with you, as to questioning what is normal, and will look into what theory says about this.
