Hi Kayleigh,
Thanks a lot for your response, I appreciate you taking the time to read and write back.
You make a very good point about technology being present in other places, it's something that cannot be avoided, which is something the parents are going to deal with as the children grow up. The reassuring thing for them, to my understanding is that they've brought them up with those values which they believe are right, and hope that their children maintain those values and morals. As far as being curious, I think they already are some times, and as their grandparents (from both side) are not as religious as them (not orthodox at all really) they are bought gifts such as - the most recent gift - a camera with games on it, especially designed for children, and when the children are at the grandparents they are exposed to television but the parents strictly monitor it.
I very much appreciated your input about society and influences, and I'd already done some research in that area, but I wondered if you had any thoughts about specific theorists in this area? I definitely think it would be interesting to explore what society considers to be creative and helpful for children, as it's argued that watching television can broaden the mind, can be educational (some programs academic, some making children more streetwise), alternatively television can be abused if the child is spending so much time 'glued to the tv' rather than being productive.
An area I thought about looking at was schools as children spend a good amount of time there in their lives, and in the last few years there has been an increase in computer lessons and learning computer skills - so this is somewhere where the girls will have to get involved. It made me think, that my brother who is 9 years old is so advanced in his computer skills from talking to his friends on MSN, and having to type up some of his homework - that learning from this age will make it easier for him in the future when he goes to work in offices for example. So, I wonder if being exposed to and being given the freedom to explore with media and technology is good for a child? Is this society making people less creative but more IT/ technology skilled? There are certainly pros and cons.
Thanks again for your contribution.
