Believe me, New Scientist has never, ever, been exclusively, or even
predominantly, about "only pure research".

And, at a guess, my memory is fading, it is now 40 years or more since the
magazine first put a foot into colourful waters, and a quarter of a century
since every issue contained colour.

I thought it would be worth correcting any possible misconceptions before
they take hold and end up cast in stone somewhere like Wikipedia. On stone,
I have, somewhere, the very heavy hot metal frame for the last contents'
page before New Scientist finally abandoned that particular technology.

Just in case anyone is interested, here is the contents list as displayed on
the front cover of the first issue, in November 1956:

Scientist and sergeant-major
Where next from Calder Hall ?
Our neighbour Mars
How bacteria work
Physiology and the athlete
Sir Edward Appleton
The Science-Arts barrier
Survival in plants and fruits

Dear Julia,
Whow, have just scanned through it and it looks superb - vivid sharp
photos, very visual, and brilliant design. The articles also look
interesting and varied, will subscribe immediately (if it is free?!) and
start reading it.
When I was at school and doing science and maths at A-level (yes, aeons
ago) we used to look at the then New Scientist, only in black and white
and not too motivating even for we potential scientists. It was summed
up in one well meant but hardly encouraging article praising a scientist
who had spent "twenty years devoted to the lugworm"!
Later of course the NS went coloured and instead of only pure research
more articles were about climate change, genetics, social and and
economic issues related to science and so on. Your "Fascination" has
gone even further in that direction - congratulations.
Alan
