Hi,
If you haven't seen it already - we're running an event at the
Biochemical Society next next week - it's officially about women and
science blogging, but we should be covering issues of women in writing
and diversity in science more broadly than just gender.
For example, Martin Robbins is on the panel, and I know he's keen to
talk about science communication's 'liberal bias' -

Science Blogging Talkfest - April 2011
Monday 4th April 2011
Charles Darwin House, London
Chair: Alice Bell, Imperial College, London
Panelists:
Hannah Devlin, The Times
Heather Mendick, Goldsmiths, University of London
Martin Robbins, The Lay Scientist/Guardian
Jenny Rohn, University College London
There's been a lot of talk about barriers for women in science
blogging in the last few months - both within science blogging
communities and from larger organisations such as the UK Resource
Centre for Women in SET.
We hope to continue this discussion, but also broaden the debate to
talk about women in science and writing and to consider diversity in
an appropriately 'diverse' way. What about other hot-button topics
like race, class and sexuality? There are a fair number of celebrated
British science bloggers with learning disabilities, perhaps because
of the UK science blogosphere's interest in 'anti-quack' activity, but
are people with other disabilties underrepresented? Further, as Martin
Robbins has suggested, is there a lack of political diversity too,
with too few right-wing bloggers?
Does any of this matter? If so, what can we do? Come along, and ask
our panel and each other questions, voice opinions and share
experiences.
18:15 - 19:00 Registration, drinks and cake
19:00 - 20:30 Science Blogging Talkfest
20:30 - Informal discussion at The Blue Lion pub
We do hope you can join us.
