Hi Anne
Way back in the 80's we did quite a bit of work in OH to raise awareness
of AIDS in South Africa. As Emma said, singing is a great way to spread
information, but so is drama. Africans are very natural actors and they
love a good story.
We had a little committee going who actually told the story about AIDS
through drama, dancing and singing - the impact was great.
Good luck.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Ice breakers
Hello List
I have been running and delivering an AIDS awareness project in a very
remote area in Limpopo S Africa for a number of years now. An
occupational physician and I are going out again during the university
break. Some subscribers have kindly donated equipment for the project in
the past, I am not asking for equipment but ideas for training and team
building games. We try to incorporate frequent changes of activities as
the attendees are not used to "classroom type classes" and the ages
range from children to adults, employed to unemployed. We have trained
health care assistants, nurses, a police officer, kindergarten and
primary teachers and diamond mine workers - quite disparate group - some
can't read or write as there is no written language for Pedi. If anyone
has ideas for "icebreaking" activities which would work with such an
unusual group please can you contact me off list with your ideas.
The project incorporates a health education workshop which runs over
four days. The attendees are a mixed group some speak some excellent
English and local languages, some are less fluent English speakers and
some speak no English at all so it is a challenge as neither myself nor
most of the trainers speak the local languages. We get the message
across by lots of role play and demonstration of practical skills. The
attendees who speak English translate what we teach to those who are
less fluent.
Believe it or not it works and although it is challenging it is great
fun.
(Any subscribers from southern African countries may be interested to
know that it was featured on a SABC documentary last Easter).
I look forward to receiving any helpful suggestions.
Many thanks
