Applications are sought for two, three-year funded studentship in the
School of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh under the supervision of
Dr. Derek A. Wann, to begin in September 2011.
The PhD studentships are available for projects involving the
development of state-of-the-art electron diffraction methods. The
projects will involve the design and use of supersonic expansions to
vibrationally cool a variety of molecular species, allowing their
structures to be determined using gas electron diffraction. Work will
also be carried out towards performing time-resolved electron
diffraction experiments using a femtosecond laser to allow ultrafast
chemical processes to be observed. Much of the work is collaborative and
may involve spending time in laboratories elsewhere in the world.
Individual projects will be tailored to an individual's areas of
interest and expertise. Experience of performing quantum chemical
calculations, and a knowledge of relevant programming languages
(FORTRAN, MATLAB, Python, C++) would be beneficial but not essential.
Previous experience of using femtosecond lasers would be a bonus.
These are three-year, tax-free studentship awards, and cover a stipend
and fees in line with the EPSRC's current recommended level. Due to
funding eligibility requirements, applicants should be UK nationals.
Nationals of other EU member states may be eligible for a full award
(stipend and fees) if they have spent three or more years in the UK
prior to appointment.
Applications are invited from candidates with an appropriate honours
degree (first class or upper second class) in chemistry, chemical
physics or physics. Applications will be accepted until the positions
are filled.
Informal enquiries are encouraged and should be made to Dr. Derek Wann
([log in to unmask]).
I would be grateful if this information could be passed to interested
candidates.
