For the last century or so whenever the life cycle has been discussed in medicine it has mainly referred to the life stages of human parasites as many of these organisms have depended on 'vector' hosts (the mosquito, snails, etc) for part of their reproductive phase. During the inter-war years, however, the idea of a life cycle began to be applied to certain bacteria, then to cancer cells, and finally after WWII to humans. The idea that the life span can be sub-divided and that life is governed by temporal dimensions (and can be construed as a 'cycle') might seem obvious but in fact seem to be a relatively recent discovery in medicine. This paper will therefore explore how medicine constructed a temporal analysis for people/patients and illnesses over the last few decades and will invite discussion on the nature of time.
This talk is free and open to all (no need to book)
