Yes, but many moons ago Adobe's support for JPEG2000 seemed to be flaky so we took the decision to not go down that route. So then why not ditch Photoshop? Simple, I haven't found a reliable image editor that can work in L*a*b* or have full ICC profile support so we carried on with TIFFs.
There's bound to be a solution now that someone will suggest...
I know the Wellcome Trust use JPEG2000 and are speaking on its use at the AHFAP international Conference in July so I'll be listening to that talk very closely.

Have you considered using JPEG2000 for a master copy instead of TIFF? JPEG2000 is being used by the Biodiversity Heritage Library.

Hi Tehmina,
If scanning we'd use TIFFs, but as we shoot our objects digitally we have the RAW image file as the master. We then process out to a master TIFF, which is the 'working master' that you mention, from which all the varieties of JPEG are derived. For us the RAW file is really the digital equivalent of the negative or transparency.
As for backup, we've never used Gold CD's as the capacity was always too small anyway, we backup our RAW files to raided hard drives, a network server and it's tape backup system run by our IT department and additionally two sets of branded DVDs. In a nutshell we backup to everywhere we possibly can.
Hope this helps.

What is your opinion/received wisdom on the following?
When digitising collections do you ensure that two masters are created, one to be untouched for separate archival storage (to be checked/migrated as
required) but primarily for preservation rather than access; and another working master, for example accessed on a network drive? The working master is used for creating further surrogates for online use, file transfers, etc.
Or do you work off one master copy, e.g. an uncompressed TIFF of a photograph, and create all your surrogates from this and not bother with the separate storage of a master?
Second question: Digital preservation media, do people still use gold discs as a standard or solid state hard drives, tape or similar?
I ask having had a trawl through some of the Collections Link documents but unable to find anything specific that is based on practice (which does not mean it isn't there, I just haven't had more time to go through all the documents).
The nearest I have come to best practice type advice was old Re:source's Collections Care Benchmark document but that still talks about microfilm masters (2002).
Thanks,
Tehmina
