Dear MCGers,
I wanted to let you know that NMSI has released 218,822 object records
from the Science Museum, National Media Museum, and National Railway
Museum, with links to 40,596 media records (metadata about images
already published online) under a
The documentation and links are at http://bit.ly/frYZA9.
We've released the files as a lightweight experiment - we'd like to
understand whether, and if so, how, people would use our data. We'd also
like to explore the benefits for the museum and for programmers using
our data. I hope it'll help museums understand the potential of open
data and understand different ways of creating engaging collections
experiences. The files are in CSV format - because it's a really simple
format, viewable in a text editor, we hope that it will be usable by
most people.
We're really excited to see what people make with them, so please do let
us know what you're playing with, and of course also if you find
anything that needs fixing. You can comment at
http://sciencemuseumdiscovery.com/blogs/museumdev/, through email or
twitter.
On a personal note, this is probably my last list message from this
address, as tomorrow is my last day at NMSI/Science Museum before I
start a PhD in digital humanities at Open University. I'd love to stay
in touch with the museum world, so if you've got projects you'd like me
to be involved with, drop me a line.
Cheers, Mia
