INTERACTIVE SYSTEMS FOR INTEGRATING AND INTERPRETING RECORDS CONTAINING GEO-SPATIAL DATA, a collaboration between the University of York and The National Archives
The key objective of this project is to enhance the experience of potential users, both novice and professional, of The National Archive’s (TNA) archive collections. This will be done through the design and prototyping of interfaces for interacting with data relating to the history of specific time periods, places or subjects.
This proposal is consistent with ongoing investment by TNA in digitization and information retrieval, and complements it by adding dynamic ways of interacting with the content of those digitized records, specifically for retrieval and organisation of data by individual users. The aim is to help users make sense of the data presented and aid in the interpretation and understanding of what is contained within the archive collections.
The project will start with in-depth scenario-based design, exploring the user requirements of different potential users of the archives. This phase of the project will build on logs of data use already in existence for TNA and extend this by researching the methods used among focus groups of amateur and professional users researching specific sites. This design process will be used to design appropriate software solutions and also to select key record series which best support the initial development of a system within TNA.
The project will be supervised at TNA by Amy Warner, Head of Systems Development and Search at The National Archives and at the University of York by Professor Helen Petrie and Dr Chris Power.
