Succession Planning for the Heritage and Creative Sectors – Creating Peak Performance in Difficult Times
The Cultural Heritage and Creative Sectors are facing enormous challenges. Despite contributing just under £7b to the UK economy per annum, there are significant barriers to their future success.
Although staff turnover in these sectors is relatively low, more than a fifth of all businesses experience difficulties recruiting new staff, and report significant challenges in ensuring that existing staff are sufficiently skilled and knowledgeable to perform at the peak of their abilities, despite the workforce being highly qualified.
Organisations experience skills gaps due to staff lacking experience, having no time for training and/or a limited budget so the issue is not how the workforce can fill their skills gaps, but how they can find time for, and finance, the training.
The key to finding innovative solutions to these challenges lies in effective succession planning. Taking time out from the day to day running of the organisation to identify skills gaps, discuss future opportunities for business growth and put in place strategies to develop internal knowledge sharing is essential if the sector is to thrive.
