Those search abilities will be added as we refine the resource and is a relatively simple thing to add.
We will add search functions to all the layers once they are put on line such as the tithe apportionments so that you can display land use, or land ownership search personal or place names.
We will also be adding an 1851 street name search at the request of the family history society. They have given us a copy of their data.
The essential thing for the launch was to have the community layer and historic maps live with the spyglass tool. This site will continue to evolve which is why we have the rss feed.

And apologies for my Data dump terminology .
It is clearer not that this is not an Online HER.
The main thing I stand by is (and the same is true for Pastmap and so many
others)
I can't search it. - this is the one crucial feature that most people
don't have.
Taking Bristol for example I would love to be able to say... show me all
the Roman sites.
ping... there they are.
then I ask show me all the world war II sites.
ping... there they are.
To me a map with dots will never achieve its full potential unless the data
that is displayed on it is not dynamic in as much as it is searchable and
then displayable on that map and the various layers of historic mapping.
As a note about the icons. I lost the user icons (green diamonds) once I
was zoomed in Google Map icons - bold and 'fat' with outlines that mean
that it will never be lost. Something I have used before as well on web
mapping I have worked on. As you say, this can be worked on - though
rather than a small subjective issue, the UI is crucial in today's
society.... have you considered an app as well where people can find the
closest sites. (it would have to be free though! ) Where people can
interact with star ratings....
Anyway... I realise this is not an online HER and I am sure people do enjoy
using it. These comments are meant to give constructive criticism, not
demeaning anyone, just pointing out that a map with dots is basically what
is there. and that will be great for people to look at a specific area.
and yes they can add pics (though I do think that sever side image
compression should take place) and comment, which is great. It is all
going well.
Increasing the profile of the HER is important, in fact more important than
ever now.
Most of my ramblings are things which go round my head. There is a
world of opportunity to be embraced out there. Including 3D mapping and
visualisations.

Is there a wider debate to be had about this?
