Have added this to BAJR and the growing number of HERs online -
Apart from the usual good luck with it.. which of course I extend. Here
are my comments.
Like Crispin...
The monuments layer... it could be on.
the dots are dull. a more representational icon could be found?
(Speaking as an IT person as well as a designer - I can still get lost in
the tech side and forget the UI )
This takes me to the final bit.
How do I use it? and Why? I read the who will use it... but it seems
like a data dump rather than a research tool
How do I find anything? I seem to have to randomly click dots in the hope
of finding anything. It would be reasonable to ask the HER a question if
it is to be used by unis and school kids doing research. But I can't... I
can't find the medieval Bristol, I can't find the bridges.
People can upload images... why? and as to worries about hi res images,
they can be easily downsampled server side. So that fits with Crispins
point about community asset points. When we did a site for Bute, we
ensured the images were downsized and thumnailed. you don't need a 4m
600dpi wide image on a 22" 96dpi screen ;)
Oh, and can we stop calling things assets.. we may know what they are, but
the public would prefer plain English. and once again I ask why?
Scotlands Canmore has an ability to add images and text - which has been a
roaring success - to known sites. Though I would love it if it also moved
to adding new sites, which is what it looks like you are doing. But you see
where i m going, there is no connection between know sites and new sites and
sites that are known, but someone has taken a photo of from another angle.
The question is what is the purpose of this layer?
Again like Crispin the Javascript map (in particular) lurches across the
screen when a point is clicked - it can appear in the available space with a
tail to the point.
Again, this is hopefully constructive, and not meant to take away from what
has been done. But if it helps, then thats not a bad thing.
All works fine in Firefox and IE (latest versions)
