Call for Papers
You are invited to submit an abstract of a paper for presentation at the IAFPA 2011 Annual Conference by 15 April 2011. Abstracts will be considered by the Scientific Committee and you should receive confirmation about whether the paper has been accepted by 31th May 2011. We welcome abstracts on topics such as:
• Speaker identification/comparison
• Presenting evidence in court
• Speaker profiling
• Disputed utterances
• Voice line-ups
• Speech and audio enhancement
• Authentication of recordings
• Forensic acoustics.
A special session will be dedicated to the ongoing and important discussion of presenting evidence in court.
The topics listed above are not a complete list, and other topics would be welcome if they promote the aims of IAFPA, which are to 'foster research and provide a forum for the interchange of ideas and information on practice, development and research in forensic phonetics and acoustics set down and enforce standards of professional conduct and procedure for those involved in forensic phonetic and acoustic casework'.

Satellite Meeting on Elicitation of Forensic Speech Sample
A satellite meeting on Thursday 28th July 2011 will be devoted to the elicitation of forensic speech samples. This includes both interviews for language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO) and reference recordings of suspects for speech sample comparisons.
Presentations for this satellite meeting might include, but are not limited to the following topics:
• current practices in LADO and in recording of suspects
• interviewing techniques
• application of established methods of linguistic field research re data elicitation
• dealing with disguise and uncooperativeness
• strategies of less than fully cooperative speakers
• (dis)advantages of monologues, question-answer formats, repeating sentences, telephone vs. direct interviews etc.
• sociolinguistic issues
We invite abstracts for this meeting. We specifically aim to have room for sharing experiences and ideas, so that current practice in both LADO and speech sample comparisons may benefit.

This ISCA Workshop on Experimental Linguistics 2011 is the fourth Workshop, which takes place in Paris, France. The Workshop aims to bring together professionals working with language in different settings and to promote discussion and exchange of ideas on approaches to the study of language. The Workshop will focus on experimental and interdisciplinary approaches with the ultimate objective of boosting international research and collaboration.

2nd Call for Papers:

Call for Papers:
During this conference, we will attempt to put into perspective the findings of several domains (psycholinguistic, sociophonetics, cognitive sociolinguistics, perceptual dialectology, automatic speech processing) implicated in the identification of the accents of French spoken outside of France.
We encourage presentations dealing with the following topics:
- Contributions made by the perception of varieties of French outside of France toward the modelling of perception/speech production (especially usage-based models)
- The role of linguistic and non-linguistic factors in the perception of linguistic variation within the Francophone world
- Cognitive prototypes and cultural stereotypes in the perception of accents
- The degree of intercomprehension among the varieties of French
- Dialectometric approaches (the distance perceived between two or more dialects)
- Automatic recognition of accents
- Automatic processing of accented speech
- Issues related to the perception of accents in French-language teaching in the Francophone world.
Experimental approaches are especially welcome.
Instructions for submitting proposals
- The conference will host oral and poster presentations.
- Proposals should be sent as a .doc or .rtf file to the following address before April 30 2011: anika.falkert univ-avignon.fr.
- They should take the form of a two-page document: on the first page, title of paper, author's name, address and professional affiliation; on the second page, title of paper and anonymous abstract no longer than 400 words accompanied by 4-5 keywords and any given references and the type of presentation (oral or poster presentation).
- The abstract should mention explicitly the given area(s) into which the work best fits: psycholinguistics, sociophonetics, cognitive sociolinguistics, perceptual dialectology, automatic speech processing.

The Psycholinguistic Representation of Tone (PLRT) conference will be held in Hong Kong on August 22-23, 2011, as a satellite of the International Congress on Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS; Hong Kong, August 17-21, 2011). The conference will identify a worldwide network of researchers and laboratories actively conducting advanced research on tone, and will be held in Hong Kong, at the centre of an area in which a large proportion of the world’s tone languages are spoken. We hope to attract researchers from linguistics, phonetics, speech science, psychology, engineering, speech pathology, and having the conference as a satellite to ICPhS will enhance accessibility and delegates’ access to home-institution conference funding.
The aims are to
(a) promote research on tone, a distinct but relatively neglected aspect of speech;
(b) explore research issues raised especially by tones, e.g., tone vs intonation, lexical tone vs musical pitch, left vs right hemisphere processing, amusia and aphasia; and
(c) facilitate information transfer and collaboration between researchers from diverse areas, e.g., psychology, neuroscience, music cognition, phonetics and phonology, engineering and computer science.

Project: Speaker-controlled variability in children's speech in interaction.
An ESRC-funded post is available for a post-doctoral Research Associate with a background in speech and hearing sciences. The postholder will assist in a study on ‘Speaker-controlled variability in children's speech in interaction’. Responsibilities will include recording an extensive corpus of spontaneous speech for children aged 8 to 14 years, carrying out acoustic-phonetic analyses, designing and running speech perception testing with adult listeners, data analysis and writing up papers for publication.
The postholder will be working closely with the principal investigator on this project, Prof. Valerie Hazan.
The post is initially funded for 3 years and is available from 15 April 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter, and the starting salary, inclusive of London Allowance, is £31,778 per annum.
Applicants must have completed a PhD in a relevant field (speech and hearing sciences, experimental phonetics, psychology). Experience in the acoustic analysis of speech and in the testing of human participants is essential, and experience of testing children and/or analyzing child speech will be an
advantage. Effective organizational, written and verbal communication
skills are also essential.

determinants which is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific
Research (NWO). The aim of the project is to investigate the mutual
intelligibility of related languages within the Germanic, Slavic and
Romance language families. The results will be correlated with linguistic
factors, such as phonetic and lexical distances, as well as
extra-linguistic factors, such as language attitudes towards and
familiarity with the languages concerned. Tests will also be carried out
with English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) to compare the (mutual)
intelligibility of related languages with the (mutual) intelligibility of
ELF as spoken by the same groups of speakers. Each PhD student will
cover one of the language areas (Germanic, Slavic or Romance) but they will
work together methodologically and cooperate with senior researchers. The

Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who can offer the following:
. university graduate
. Master's degree in phonetics, linguistics (or related field)
. good knowledge of languages and the language situation in the relevant language area (Germanic, Slavic or Romance)
. an interest in experimental research, language planning, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics
. statistical knowledge
. experience with speech manipulation and speech processing programmes (e.g. PRAAT)
. strong motivation to complete a PhD dissertation in four years
. proven research abilities
. publication skills and desire to publish
. fluency in written and spoken English (TOEFL 620, IELTS 7,5, Cambridge Advanced CAE)
. ability to work collaboratively
. an accurate way of working
. self motivation.

Edda Farnetani (1936-2010)
Edda Farnetani died December 14, 2010. Her contribution to phonetic science was mostly in the areas of timing and coarticulation in Italian. She believed that a theory of speech production should include information about articulatory and acoustic variation associated with linguistic units of different sizes, stress, speech tempo, style,
and the physio-mechanical properties of articulatory structures. She identified some patterns of articulatory behaviour using electropalatographic and acoustic data at a time when techniques for analysing articulatory movement in speech were not widely available. She will be missed for her enthusiastic approach to research and her insightful and energetic approach to new projects.
Ilse Lehiste (1922-2010)
Ilse Lehiste died Christmas day, 2010. Her death brought to the end more than six decades of groundbreaking work in many of the phonetic sciences and historical linguistics. She was the author, co-author or editor of 20 books and about 200 articles, the recipient of many honorary degrees and other honours, and a founding member of the Linguistics Department at the Ohio State University. Her lifelong contribution to the study of suprasegmentals was in part inspired by her Estonian heritage, and many of her last contributions were about Estonian prosody. Her influence on the field was marked not only by her personal achievements, but also by her great influence on students and colleagues, hundreds of whom feel her loss deeply.
