Can anyone identify the reddish material in the jar on this photo? The jar was found during a gasworks remediation project in old holder fill material probably dating from early to mid 20th century. It must have been accidentally or deliberately discarded at that time. We have not attempted to open the jar - the lid is tightly sealed.
The material is micro-crystalline and glitters as the light catches it. The liquid appears to be water but may be some other fluid of similar viscosity. It does not appear to be oily. The cylindrical pieces are about 10 and 20 mm in diameter, and appear to have been extruded rather than cored, being slightly irregular in shape, as if the material was once a paste, or molten.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
