The Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute and Department of Biochemistry, Cambridge University
Salary: £27,428 to £35,788
Limit of Tenure applies*
The Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute is a leading cancer and developmental biology research institute, directly next door to the internationally renowned Biochemistry department of the University of Cambridge, UK.
Applications are invited for a Cancer Research UK funded 3 year Postdoctoral Scientist position to join the group of Dr Philip Zegerman, to work on the structure and function of essential factors required for eukaryotic replication initiation (http://www.gurdon.cam.ac.uk/zegerman.html). The project will be under joint supervision with Dr Luca Pellegrini of the Department of Biochemistry (http://www.bioc.cam.ac.uk/uto/pellegrini.html). Our recent work has established the importance of the regulated interaction of several proteins during replication initiation (Zegerman and Diffley, Nature 2010 & Zegerman and Diffley, Nature 2007). This project aims to define the molecular mechanisms for the role of Sld3 phosphorylation as a critical switch in the initiation reaction.
Applicants will have a PhD in biochemistry or molecular biology. Expertise in protein expression, purification and the characterisation of protein-protein interactions using biophysical techniques will be essential. Previous experience of protein structure determination by X-ray crystallography is useful but not required. Familiarity with the field of DNA replication would be an advantage.
The postholder will be primarily based in the lab of Dr Zegerman, but will be expected to liaise regularly with Dr Pellegrini and thus good communication skills will be essential. The person appointed will have the ability to multi-task, prioritise work effectively, and be expected to keep up to date with the field.
Informal enquiries can be addressed to Dr P. Zegerman ([log in to unmask]) or Dr L. Pellegrini ([log in to unmask]). A covering letter and CV, and a completed CHRIS 6 form (downloadable from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6/) should be emailed to [log in to unmask]
* The funds for this post are for 3 years.
