Dear all,
I’m pleased to announce the formation of a new ARA group – the Section for New Professionals. The group was approved by the ARA council in December 2010.
The Section for New Professionals will represent, inform and promote the interests of all pre-course volunteers and trainees; students on archive, records management and archive conservation courses; and newly-qualified professionals.
If you are currently volunteering, studying or have qualified within the last 5 years, this Section will:
• Provide advice on gaining pre-course experience, studying, and beginning your professional development.
• Provide a forum for new professionals to discuss issues.
• Disseminate information relevant to new professionals and advocate on your behalf to the rest of the ARA.
• Foster links between new professionals through networking and courses, as well as course providers and
employers.
How will we do this?
• Use social media and the web to keep you updated about professional issues and offer you opportunities to share
your experiences as a new/upcoming professional.
• Come out and meet you! We will visit universities, volunteers and trainees to find out the issues that matter to
you, and organise social events so you can meet other professionals in your area.
• Help you to attend training events without breaking the bank!
• Publish a quarterly e-magazine with articles and opinion pieces written by, and for, new professionals.
The Section’s Events and Training Officer has recently visited UCL to talk to the archive students about the Section. Similar events are planned in other areas so keep an eye on our website for further details.
We are also looking for contributions to articles for our quarterly e-magazine. These articles can be about any aspect of the profession (so long as it’s relevant!) so please get in touch if you want to get something off your chest!
If you wish to join the group and are already a member of the ARA, then please contact [log in to unmask] If you are considering joining the ARA, you can join our Section by writing your preference on the registration form (as we currently don’t have a tick box on the form!)
ARA members and non-members alike can join our section’s community group on the new ARA website (http://www.archives.org.uk/community.html). The Section’s webpages on the ARA site also provide further information on the group and are also a good way of keeping in touch with our future plans and events.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Jonathan Bush
Chairman of the Section for New Professionals
