Hi Karen
The main difference between EAD and systems like CALM or Adlib is that
the former usually only holds catalogue data (i.e. ISAD(G) elements),
whilst the latter are holistic Collections Management Systems.
That means CALM/Adlib and other systems will hold data to support the
different work process: from the Accession Register through cataloguing
and indexing, to loans / enquiries / locations / conservation etc. So a
lot more functionality. Some systems such as CALM have reporting
functions that allow them to export catalogues in EAD format (this is
how we get our catalogues onto Aim25 and the Hub)
EAD support ISAD, but therefore does not support SPECTRUM which is the
Museum standard for cataloguing (so you are missing elements such as
simple object name, maker, technique etc). I know CALM supports
SPECTRUM as we use it for cataloguing our Museum collection - I don't
know about Adlib.
