The fur trade in North America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
depended heavily on birchbark canoes. Invented by American Indians,
adopted by French and British fur traders, the birchbark canoe is a
fascinating and historically important craft. Built of seemingly fragile
materials they transported thousands of pounds of furs, trade goods, and
crew back and forth from eastern cities like Montreal to the Canadian
northwest.
