2011 2nd Annual Conference on Visual Anthropology: Film Education and Pedagogy

Presented by the Visual Anthropology Studio at the Center for the Research of the Ethnic Minorities of China’s Southwestern Borderlands, Yunnan University

The Visual Anthropology Studio of Yunnan University is pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Conference on Visual Anthropology: Film Education and Pedagogy will take place on June 20-21, 2011, in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. The conference will include 1) Presentation of scholarly papers, 2) Screening and discussion of student films, 3) Visual Anthropology faculty panel discussion, and 4) Visual Anthropology students panel discussion. 

Interested parties are invited to submit abstracts of 250-350 words for papers on any of the themes listed below. Additionally, students interested in presenting their film works are invited to submit a copy of the film (in DVD format), as well as an abstract. Final drafts of papers in English should be 5000-6000 words. Chinese papers of commensurate length will also be accepted. Papers will be published following the conference. Details on publication will be made available closer to the date.

Themes:

1.	Developing Visual Anthropology: How have visual anthropology programs been integrated into academic departments? How has the institutional context of visual anthropology affected its development as a discipline?

2.	Visual Anthropology Practices and Theoretical Models: What innovative teaching methods have emerged in order to incorporate visual anthropology and documentary film into anthropological research and theory?

3.	Visual Anthropology and the Interpretation of Cultures: How does visual anthropology film production contribute to further cultural analysis and challenging cultural stereotypes and pre-conceptions? 

4.	Creating Internet Platforms for Visual Anthropology Education: How can the internet be used to share films, theory, and educational methods?

5.	Examining Community Video Education: How does the practice of community documentary production play a role in the development of the discipline of Visual Anthropology? The conference will include screenings and discussion with Yunnanese Community Video Education participants and scholars.

6.	Case Studies of Student Films: What practical and theoretical questions emerge through the production of student films? Student/instructor pairs are invited to present and discuss work produced by the student.

Important Deadlines and Dates:

15 April 2011 – Deadline for paper abstracts and film submissions
30 May 2011 – Deadline for final drafts of papers (word limit 5000-6000 words)

19 June – Participants arrive in Kunming and register at Yunnan University
20-21 June 2011 – Panel discussions, lectures, and film screenings take place
22 June 2011 – Participants depart

Invitations and Lodging Information:
Further details on transport, conference location, conference schedule, and translation services will be made available to participants closer to the date.

1.	Officially selected participants who submit all requisite materials before the stated deadlines and have received an official invitation to the conference are eligible for free lodging in the Yunnan University Hotel for three nights during the period of the conference (June 19-22). Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from the site of the conference, and non-PRC participants must obtain the appropriate visa for entry into the People’s Republic of China from their local Chinese embassy or consulate. 

2.	Individuals who would have not been selected as participants and would like to attend the conference as an observer are required to contact the Visual Anthropology Studio (details below) and must receive a letter of invitation in order to attend the conference. These individuals are responsible for their own food, lodging, and travel. Non-PRC participants must obtain the appropriate visa for entry into the People’s Republic of China from their local Chinese embassy or consulate.
