I would also like to remind auditors that even with decent levels of
maintenance hinges are going to stiffen up over time, so I would urge people
to err on the side of the doors being as easy to move as is reasonably
possible because trying to open a stiff door while sitting in a wheelchair,
which by definition is not a static pushing or pulling position, is a
difficult and frustrating task and a number of wheelchair users have use of
only one side of their body which makes the situation even more interesting!

Piece of string, small key ring, pre-weighed bags of sand.
Measuring the force to open the door is somewhat silly as a process (and
inaccurate).
Much easier and more accurate to apply a force of 30N (or 22.5N for the
second arc) and see if the door opens. Then it’s a yes/no issue.
Best wishes,
Terry

hi again, just to say that BS8300:2009 is different from Part M (in
introducing a 2-part measurement), so maybe that's what they've just
cottoned on to - though they're still late! We use the Pesola gauge too. We
tried one other, but this was definitely better. None of them are precise -
I dont think it's something that can be measured entirely precisely

Hi

I have also had conversations with door manufacturers, joiners and
contractors who seem to be have suddenly become aware of this 'new' standard
which turns out in reality to be BS 8300 or Part M. At least the message
seems to be slowly (very slowly) filtering through........

Hi, as far as Im aware the most recent advice is as given in BS8300:2009,
see 6.5.2, but here is an extract:

"For most disabled people to have independent access through single
or double swing doors, the opening force, when measured at the
leading edge of the door, should be not more than 30 N from 0° (the
door in the closed position) to 30° open, and not more than 22.5 N
from 30° to 60° of the opening cycle".

We are just in the process of testing all of our main thoroughfare doors on
campus at the University of Essex in line with this guidance,

Best wishes,
Rowena

Subject: Testing door closers

Hi everyone.

One of my colleagues has been told by a joiner that there is now a new
standard for testing the opening weight of doors / door closers.

I've done a quick internet trawl and can't see anything about it. This is
the first anyone on my team has heard of it.

Does anyone have any further information or can anyone direct me to a
website?

Thanks.
