The National Conservation Service is undertaking a study to scope the
development of a large-scale collaborative remote storage facility. The
aim of such a storage facility would be to provide economies of scale so
that smaller collections can be securely stored at the low rates usually
only afforded to very large collections. Likewise it would provide
short term storage at the same rate normally only provided for long term
contracts.
Collections of little-used material may be ideal for such a facility,
but it is also envisaged that it would provide options for frequent
retrieval and delivery for items, both in their original form and/or as
scanned copies where appropriate, so 'dark storage' is not the only
option being considered.
If readers of the list are willing to share such information in
confidence or openly, please would you let us know:
a) would a low cost, high quality remote storage service be of interest?
b) if it would, can you say how much material (linear metres or box
numbers) you would interested in 'out-storing' (alternatively you may
wish to define this as the amount of over-spill you already have plus an
amount of space you would like to free up in your repository).
The findings will be published in outline on this list.
Thank you in anticipation of your interest!
Chris Woods
