By now everyone knows about The Big Bang Fair, starting tomorrow in London (http://www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/home.cfm). Meanwhile, at the other end of the country we have Maker Faire UK in Newcastle:

They're very different events, and somewhat complementary - my impression from the last two years has been that Big Bang is about STEM as career choice, while Maker Faire is more about STEM as lifestyle choice.
In a brazen bit of self-promotion, here's a film I shot last Saturday of some local kids building their exhibit. It'll give you an idea of the sort of lunacy involved, but also the level of engagement of makers.

Public engagement in general could, I think, learn rather a lot from the 'don't just look, do' approach of the maker movement.
We're exhibiting SciCast at Maker Faire this year - come and say hello if you make it to Newcastle. It's worth the trip!
