Dear Geographers,
The School of Social Sciences at The University of Western Sydney has advertised two positions that may be of interest to IAG and NZGS listers.
These positions are part of the UWS 100 Academics Campaign. The first position (Lecturer in Urban Planning and Urban Studies, Ref 320/11) is also a strategic component of our plan to reinforce UWS’s strong position in the ERA rankings for Urban Planning and in Human Geography (http://www.uws.edu.au/research/ors/era). Geography and Urban Studies has been recognised within UWS as an Area of Emerging Research Strength.
The School is also seeking a Lecturer in Social Sciences (Ref 323/11), who can contribute to one of the School’s discipline areas (including Geography and Urban Studies) as well as teach into the Bachelor of Social Sciences core programs.
A successful Geography, Urban Studies or Planning applicant will have PhD qualifications and a demonstrable record of excellence in teaching, and high level international publications relevant to Geography and Urban Studies.
Remuneration Package: Academic Level B from 13 May 2011 $96,915 to $114,361

The broad functions / responsibilities / duties include:
•The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
•Initiation and development of unit material.
•Acting as unit coordinators.
•The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
•Supervision of the program of study of Honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
•Supervision of major Honours or postgraduate research projects.
•The conduct of research.
•Involvement in professional activity.
•Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior employees.
•Marking and assessment.
•Consultation with students.
•A range of administrative functions, the majority of which are connected with the units in which the academic teaches.
•Attendance at departmental and/or College meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.
