I'd imagine Amiando would be good for free events.
I used it for MuseumNext in 2010 and it worked really well, my only complaint about it is that they don't give the event organiser the money people have paid to attend an event until two weeks after it's happened. Obviously that wouldn't be a problem for a free event.
