Hi Martin,
My institution is upgrading from Bb7.3 to Bb9.1 this summer and these are some of the key things we are doing to engage as many colleagues as possible with training and support, with a lot less resource than we had when we first implemented Bb back in 2008:
- 2 x sneak preview sessions at the end of last year (1 for faculty VLE support/learning technologists and 1 for academic and admin staff)
- Online and F2F VLE Upgrade road shows for faculties, schools etc to celebrate where we've been, sell the new features and inform colleagues of the Upgrade project timescales.
- 1 x Training pilot with faculty staff nominated as faculty VLE advisors (voluntary roles) - April
- another preview session to look at final configuration, with the opportunity for VLE-related colleagues from around the University to network - April
2 x new one-hour F2F training sessions targeted at existing VLE users (getting started and new features), offered centrally and for faculties to book from May
- updated initial VLE training sessions for new VLE users offered centrally, F2F and online from June
- VLE Upgrade website for communications (e.g. mailing list, Twitter, blog) and Captivate demos of new features: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/vle/bb9/
- Existing VLE Support website for staff and students will be updated with new user documentation and Captivate animations: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/vle/
Some of the new features are not being implemented straight away (mainly because of technical issues) so hopefully this will make the transition easier for our colleagues.
Hope this helps and good luck with the upgrade :-)
Cheers,
Kirsten

Dear Martin,
We have a page in our Nexus website for the new features in Blackboard 9.1 http://nexus.aber.ac.uk/xwiki/bin/view/Main/Blackboard+9
There is a guide for students and one for staff. These cover the most commonly-used features.
We have also run a series of a one-hour Blackboard Briefing sessions, in which we can customise what we teach to match the needs of that particular group of staff.
For next year, we want to do more the push the newer features that staff may not be aware of. We plan to have departmental training or consultation sessions, as AU is implementing a Blackboard minimum requirement for next AY.
This should keep us busy!
Best wishes,
Mary

Thanks for this and all the suggestions so far - it's the 'push' strategies that will be harder to get right - how effective would this be in raising awareness?
I suspect most users want to know how to do something at the point at which they need to do it. A typical scenario is something I have dealt with this morning. An academic user who attended blackboard training months ago (but has forgotten the training) wanted assistance in setting up an assignment submission. Which way to go; Turnitin or Assignment submission? Because I had helped them with something recently they just picked up the phone and I walked them through the options and how to do it. Help at the point of need.
I suspect that a push strategy on new features will be useful to those that are a) curious about the product and using it in their teaching, b) motivated to consume and retain the information and b) change practice as a result. Crucially though would be the culture of use that such a strategy was exposed to but then we're into a discussion on barriers to adoption of technology enhanced learning and that's a whole new thing...
Thanks

We have been given an option by Blackboard to be hosted, which we have

Hi Daz
We haven't gone officially live with hosted 9.1 yet but plan to in
September. In the interim, I'm training staff on 9.1 and we're still
running with 8 (hosted at college).
So far, for any problems I've come across, the support has been
excellent....but it's usually been pretty spot-on with 8 as well. The
only bigger issue we're just hitting that was a tad unexpected is that of
migrating data across. With 8, we've run the snapshot tool but, with the
hosted version, security is such that we're not allowed direct access to
the server....so a solution still hasn't been found. I could go into more
detail but I'm not the most technical of people so, in fact, probably
couldn't.

Hi again Daz
I've just had an email from our friendly Blackboard Account Exec who has
pointed out that although it's true that root access to the hosted
production server is not permitted, it is still possible to run snapshot
scripts via a remote snapshot client installation that resides on our own
servers in college. The commands are then sent securely from our own in
house snapshot server to the hosted production server at Blackboard.
I'm reposting, as I'd hate to give Blackboard bad press, if it's
unwarranted!
He's putting us in touch with Denise Howze in their Managed Hosting
support team....so it's maybe worth doing the same?

Subject: Re: Calling Turnitin users - passing grades into BB
Thanks for that tip Leo.
You're right - hiding My Grades on a particular course doesn't stop that course showing up in their global My Grades view.
And actually, hiding the individual column (which is pretty much a one-click job) doesn't entirely solve the problem. The student can still see their Total score - which of course includes the Turnitin mark.
So I've now gone into "Edit Column Information" and unticked "Include this Column in Grade Centre Calculations".
That solves it, but is a bit more fiddly for staff to do - especially if they then have to go in and reverse the settings after the post date.
all the best

Subject: Re: Calling Turnitin users - passing grades into BB
I think that if students have access to 'My Grades' from anywhere, they will be able to see any visible grades, according to the Grade Centre's settings which are unaffected by your Turnitin assignment settings (i.e. grades are visible as soon as entered, even if before the post date).
The exception to this is when you have anonymous marking switched on in Turnitin - this does hide the grades because they don't get passed through to the Bb GC until the post date (in order to preserve the anonymity).
So if you are using non-anonymous marking, and students do have access to the My Grades tool, I think it's best to go into the GC and 'manually' hide the relevant column from the view of students, and then go back in and reveal it on the post date.
Cheers

I think you've got that right.
The final question: students can see their marks via the Blackboard Grade Centre as soon as they have been entered.
unless Anonymous marking is turned on, in which case nothing is visible in Turnitin or Blackboard until the post date.
To get round the problem of students being able to see marks straight away, you can (temporarily) hide the link to My Grades in the Blackboard course. What I need to test, is whether students can still get to those marks via My Grades on the home page tools panel, even for courses where the My Grades link has been hidden.

Evening All,
I have a department who are interested in starting to mark online using grademark but do to previous experiences want to be certain about when the students can see the various components.
Student sees Originality report : In Turnitin if settings permit at the time the settings specify the report to be created ?
Student sees Grademark comments : In Turnitin after the post-date ?
Student sees numeric mark : In Turnitin after the post-date ..... but when in Blackboard is it after the post-date or as soon as it is entered?
Obviously I am going to put together some test cases but it is always easier to check something is doing what you expect rather than try and work it out from scratch!

With all the new features in Blackboard (and other products Campus Pack and Turnit in... etc) I'm curious how other institutions go about flagging up new tools/features to their users. Training events benefit a relatively small number of users so a programme of featured items backed up by a searchable bank of material (screencasts and guides) seems the way to go.
We're looking at bringing our training material together and making it searchable but I'm interested in whether others are using 'Push' strategies to promote product features, and some good practice in this area.

Hello all,
I can confirm that we follow the model of creating short explanatory screencasts accompanied by downloadable PDFs. We promote new additions and developments using our staff intranet, with the announcement containing a link to the appropriate screencast.
Our institution is spread across five geographically dislocated sites (Farnham, Epsom, Maidstone, Rochester and Canterbury). We found that putting on physical events was not a good use of resources as attendance was poor. The screencast/announcement strategy has enabled staff to access resources at a time that is convenient to them - each screencast contains our helpdesk email which staff use to request a phical demonstration if they are interested in a particular technology.
Our screencasts area available here:

Subject: new feature guides
With all the new features in Blackboard (and other products Campus Pack and Turnit in... etc) I’m curious how other institutions go about flagging up new tools/features to their users. Training events benefit a relatively small number of users so a programme of featured items backed up by a searchable bank of material (screencasts and guides) seems the way to go.
We’re looking at bringing our training material together and making it searchable but I’m interested in whether others are using ‘Push’ strategies to promote product features, and some good practice in this area.
