London Rediscovered
Tue 29 March
Workshop on Programming and Presenting London Archive Films
2.30-5.30pm LT B34, Main Building, Birkbeck College, Malet Street, WC1E 7HX
London’s Screen Archives network links many institutions and collections, all involved with ‘London film’. But how to make best use of these collections for specific projects? How to combine new, as well as old, media to promote awareness of London’s rich (and continuing) legacy of screen works? How to create events and series that link film with speakers and performances? How to programme the extraordinary range of work now available thanks to restoration and digitisation? These are some of the topics to be covered in a workshop that will include, among many contributors, experts in these fields:
Luke McKernan, Moving Image curator at the British Library, and historian of London’s film audiences. Patrick Russell, senior curator of Non-Fiction at the BFI National Archive, who worked on the Mitchell and Kenyon project, and more recently on two major BFI documentary publications, Land of Promise and Shadows of Progress. Angela English, development officer at the London Screen Study Collection, responsible for the LSA YouTube channel and most recently for Screening Our Memories, a toolkit on reminiscence work using archive film. Rhidian Davis, Curator of Public Programmes at BFI Southbank, Ron Peck, London filmmaker (Nighthawks, Empire State, Cross-Channel). Ian Christie, director of the London Screen Study Collection and film historian at Birkbeck College, responsible for programming many series at BFI Southbank, the British Museum and other venues.
