From my (albeit somewhat limited) experience, NVivo is mostly just a
way of categorising and cross-referencing multimedia sources, e.g.
linking a transcript to a certain point in a video, and then perhaps
linking some photos to that conversation. It doesn't do any transcribing
donkey work, or add much value to transcriptions as such. I know it's
heavily marketed as a wonder tool for qualidata analysis, but I've
always struggled to find anyone who's found it much more than just a
nice way to store and arrange files. For a student it might take more
time to learn to use it than would be gained in doing so.
Well this is a bit of a negative email so far...! Here's something
constructive to end on: a free and open-source alternative qualidata
tool which does the basics just fine, Weft QDA:
