A sports medicine expert familiar with the malady that afflicted 13
University of Iowa football players this week said the drills they endured
were dangerous and inappropriate.
The players were hospitalized for treatment of rhabdomyolysis, a condition
that causes breakdown in muscle tissue that can lead to kidney failure.
The outbreak followed strenuous workouts and mirrored what happened last
summer at a high school near Oregon Health & Science University, where Dr.
Linn Goldberg is in charge of sports medicine.
Iowa players described grueling, timed workouts consisting of 100 squats
at 50 percent of the maximum weight they could lift, a drill Goldberg said
never should be used.
"I can't believe a coach would do that to his athletes," Goldberg said.
"It's just so out of the question. This is not proper strength and
conditioning. I don't know what they were thinking."
The university called the situation a "cause for gave concern" and
promised an investigation would be completed within 90 days. Goldberg
thinks a higher authority should step in.
"The NCAA should crack down on this," said Goldberg, who last year
counseled parents at McMinnville High, where 18 players were hospitalized
following workouts and five were found to have rhabdomyolysis. Oregon
health officials blamed it on multiple factors.
