Dear All,
Research Blogs (http://exquisitelife.researchresearch.com/) will shortly be publishing the attached article on 'mis-selling' of university degrees by the use of National Student Survey data.
I am writing now to ask for signatories to a letter to be sent to THE in anticipation of a news item about the Resarch Blogs item as well as the letter. It is intended that the letter not be from the Campaign for the Public University, but from individual concerned academics. Please respond to [log in to unmask] if you wish to have your name included on the letter. Please do also forward this message on local lists.
"In response to Government proposals to introduce market-driven changes to higher education, HEFCE is currently consulting on the information that universities will be asked to provide to prospective students. This includes an enhanced role for the National Student Survey. Research (accepted by HEFCE) shows that the latter cannot be used to construct meaningful comparisons among universities and subjects. The HEFCE proposals to standardise information do not go far enough to prevent universities from ‘mis-selling’ their courses by reference to spurious rank orders. We call upon HEFCE and Universities UK to adopt a Code of Practice on the Use of Information to regulate the way such information is used."
Thanks,
John Holmwood
