Hi Stephan,
I'm replying on Helen's behalf as I also work with the Northumbria branch of
the British Science Association. The text you quote relates to our
involvement in the SciDemocracy project, jointly run by Sciencewise,
Dialogue by Design and the British Science Association. We're giving people
a questionnaire after a short discussion at the end of the show. The idea is
to talk about Darwin's wrestling with his perceived conflict between his
religious beliefs and his scientific understanding, and the way human
activity is now having an impact on evolution and species diversity - for
instance, introducing plants that crowd out native ones (e.g. rhododendron
root stock escaping into the wild in Scotland and Northumberland), or
overusing antibiotics in humans leading to adapted bacteria which are
antibiotic-resistant - and then use the questionnaires the SciDemocracy team
is providing us with to gather views, which the project team will then feed
back to policy makers in Government. We're not involved in that part, but
it's certainly unique in our region in that it uses a theatre show to
provoke discussion. Will it work? Who knows. What I do know is that tickets
are selling well and if it does work we'll want to look at ways of doing
this again, as it adds to the service the branch offers to its supporters
and will help to get more people involved in thinking about science.
If you want more information about the SciDemocracy project, a quick look at
Toby Shannon's post on 11/2/11 should be useful.
All best

Dear Helen,
thank you for this advert. There is an interesting item in your
programme, and I wonder if you could explain this in more detail, as it
may well be something that other people may try to incorporate into
their events. Unfortunately Newcastle is a bit inconvenenient for me to
visit, so it would be great if you could write something.
I'm curious about the following:

It's very good to feed discussions back to policy makers; as we are all
aware, public engagement should be a two-way process, so it's great that
you put this in your programme and highlighted it as something unique.
But how does it work in practice? Can you reveal yet which policy makers
you have in mind to influence the future of evolution, and how do you
feed the discussion back to them?
Thanks for the clarification
Cheers
Stephan
