It must be said that I have never agreed with unpaid internships. Many universities champion them as a good way of getting experience but I've often found it's those from privileged backgrounds who can afford to undertake them.
With the rise in fees this may become more apparent yet.
Further to michaels comment about the bill for 14hrs at minimum wage, you also make people unable to legally gain job seekers allowance as they are not available to actively seek work when undertaking an internship.

Yes. It has come up here, mostly because I have bored everyone to death by jumping in whenever I see one of these exploitative "opportunities".
As well as the legality angle, it might be good to point people at the website where these slaves huddle for comfort:
Interns Anonymous
http://internsanonymous.co.uk/
Anyone considering recruiting interns might do well to investigate their legal position. If not they might be in for a shock when an intern puts in a retrospective bill for the minimum wage. At £5.93 an hour, this would be £83.02 for a 14-hour week.

There has been a great deal of discussion on the Association of British Science Writers list re unpaid interns, also in the media (just Google unpaid internships and you'll find plenty to read, most recently in PR Week on PR interns) including discussion of the legality of unpaid internships within UK employment law/minimum wage law. Not sure if all of this debate has reached PSCI-COM but just thought I would flag this - also discussed on Radio 4 Today Programme last week.

We are looking to recruit a new Press and PR Intern at Deafness Research UK to support our expanding project work. This new position provides excellent opportunities to gain hand-on experience of working in the charity sector and would be ideal for a person with an interest in developing a career in press and PR.
The position is voluntary (unpaid) and for a minimum of 14 hours per week, for a 3-6 month period, based in our office in King's Cross, London.
Deafness Research UK is the country's leading medical research charity for people with hearing loss, tinnitus and other hearing problems. www.deafnessresearch.org.uk <http://www.deafnessresearch.org.uk/>
The Press and PR Intern will assist the Information and Communications Manager with the activities involved in promoting the press and PR activity at Deafness Research UK. The Intern will also play a role in supporting the charity's work around outreach and education in hearing loss and deafness, including supporting the innovative Deafness Research UK Bionic Ear Show www.bionicearshow.org.uk <http://www.bionicearshow.org.uk/>

We are looking for someone for a minimum of three months, with potential to extend the placement to six months dependent upon a three month review. Out of pocket expenses, if required, can be reimbursed for reasonable travel and lunch expenses.
