I woke certain my love was part with me,
and each of us a corpse the other left,
as spirits have been said to wonder freely
after the heart stops, ours leaping across
the gaps between us like trapeze artistes
momentarily dying and alive
on the edge of an immortality,
rabbits out of traps into a burrow
we hadn’t dug but would now occupy
in extremis. We thought so. We claimed then
that we might go for ever of such joy.
Later, some minutes on, it was different,
the song of vital fluids changed in tone
and hit a blue note which led to silence.
