CHARLES BURNETT TALKED & ANSWERED QUESTIONS (modestly)
Impose a story?
I didn’t have any answers.
I had a lot . . . I actually experienced.
I had thought of scenes generated out of the music.
My mother used to play 78 rpm blues / jazz / r & b.
I broke a disc & couldn’t use it in “Killer of Sheep”.
It wasn’t meant to be shown theatrically.
I wanted it to look “rough”.
For a documentary, you shoot what you can get.
All story-boarded.
I’m still a fan of film.
I like to have my films shown to an audience.
We used to stand at the doorway of clubs listening
for something that was very disturbing.

The Milestone Film / Steven Soderbergh production of "Killer of Sheep" on dvd, with many extras, may be available at your local library. 3 copies were on the shelves at the library 1.5 miles away. I particularly admired his modest self-presentation at the National Gallery of Art, an institution known locally for the pomposity of its petit fonctionnaire.
