Dear all,
My apologies for cross-posting.
I should like to draw your attention to an event I am organising here
in Swansea as part of the ESRC GLobal and Local Worlds of Welsh Copper
Project.
Copper Day on Saturday 5 March 2011 is a free city-wide festival
taking place at various venues in Swansea (29 things going on in
total, completely coincidently matching copper's elemental number!)
Two important anniversaries that we will be celebrating are the 200th
anniversary of the first copper ingot rolling out of the
internationally-famed Hafod Copperworks of Vivian and Sons and the
50th birthday of the Lower Swansea Valley Project which began the
world’s first post-industrial land reclamation scheme.
This will be an interesting experiment to gauge public reactions to
such an important part of Swansea's and Wales' history as well as
beyond. We are keen not to present the copper industry as 'triumphant'
and so our coverage of the Lower Swansea Valley Project which
pioneered methods to reclaim toxic landscapes and waterways is just as
important--particularly in the way it involved local communities.
Participants include a working men's social club, museums, libraries,
archives, archaeologists, business people, historians, local volunteer
groups and scientists.
"In the city that once smelted half of the world’s copper this
festival of talks, tours, activities and information aims to raise
awareness of the significance of the historic Welsh copper industry,
its heritage, and the place of copper in our lives today."

Please circulate, post to your websites and link back to the Copper Day website.
I am keen to report how this event was planned and how it went so if
you would like a write-up for any journal or newsletter or website you
edit, please let me know.
With all good wishes,
Tehmina
