medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There is a bit of mistaken identity here. The saint in question is
not Alban but Abbán moccu Corbmaic (d. 520?), described in one
version of his vita as St Gobnait's brother. The best source to check
is Pádraig Ó Riain' article Abbán in the Dictionary of Irish Biography.
There is also a very good article on St Abbán with a reliable
bibliography of primary and secondary works on (sharp intake of
breath!) Wikipedia.
Pádraig Ó Riain, professor emeritus of Old English in University
College Cork, is the foremost authority on early Irish hagiography.
His dictionary of Irish Saints is to be published in the next year or
so.
