medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
apologies for cross-posting!
Dear all,
I have just uploaded an additional 126 photographs to my web site's
historical archive, http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/archive-1.html. This
batch includes some material from private collections, including a
long-lost Merovingian gryphon fibula (rows 4-5,
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Merovingian2.html).
Once again the images are spread over all areas, but there are
concentrations in imperial Roman sculpture
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Roman6.html
including reliefs in Budapest that read like an illustrated Bullfinch's
Mythology (rows 5-9, 11) and a grave stone with a woman nursing (row 10;
cf. the medieval Virgo Lactans)
and in Gothic secular metalwork
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/ThirteenthFifteenth2.html
including objects in the form of a centaur and a harpy, and one standard
and one reliquary crown
(I was putting together images for a presentation on crowns; for another
one, see http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/HistoricalEnamel4.html).
Among the non-medieval objects that might well interest medievalists are
a finger ring whose bezel is a watch with a triptych of the Crucifixion
and instruments of the Passion as a lid
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/SixteenthSeventeenth6.html
and, for lovers of fantastic creatures, a modern winged cat
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Twentieth8.html
I am about to get to work on reorganizing the index for the archive, so
please send me suggestions for any features that you would find useful.
The reworking will take me a while, but should make the images easier to
find.
Best regards,
Genevra
