The application process for the 2011 Student Radio Feature Competition
is now underway, could colleagues make students aware of this and
encourage them to enter. We'd also like to invite you (and them) to
the next conference held in memory of Charles Parker. 2011 is the 50th
anniversary year of`The Big Hewer' the Radio Ballad about the mining
industry, and so the conference will be held in a city partly built on
the profits of coal - Newcastle- upon-Tyne.
The theme of miners and mining will be one of the main topics of the
Charles Parker Day 2011. More details will appear on this website soon
but highlights of the day will include: Peter Cox, the author of `Set
into Song' and the definitive book on the Radio Ballads, comparing The
Big Hewer to the recent BBC Radio 2 `The Ballad of the Miners' Strike'
and considers which programme is the best `radio ballad'.
We also look back at both the 70th Birthday concert for Ewan MacColl
which took place during the Miners' Strike in 1985 and featured music
from the MacColl/Seeger mini-radio ballad `Daddy, what did you do in
the Strike' and the life of the late, great radio producer Dave
Sheasby told through his own poetic radio feature about the rocks and
workers under our feet - Strata.
The day will also explore Parker's legacy in the field of radio drama
with a number of drama producers including Melanie Harris of Crosslab
Productions who is using Parker's techniques within this field.
Professor Andrew Crisell looks back at the history of drama in this
`blind medium which began in 1924 with `Danger' by Richard Hughes a
play set in a mine. In addition we'll be joined by Dr Andy Green, who
has been using the Charles Parker Archive based in Birmingham
Libraries at various outreach and educational projects in the city,
and Sara Parker, Charles' daughter and herself an award-winning radio
producer, who will talk about her latest controversial programme for
BBC Radio 4 - `Sex, Porn and Teenagers'.
At the end of the day we will also be presenting the Charles Parker
Prize for the best student radio documentary features, there will be
three prizes awarded:-
GOLD: 2 week placement in BBC Features and Documentaries in
Broadcasting House, London + £200, provided by the Charles Parker
Trust to cover expenses, and a SADiE 6 editing system provided by
Prism Sound.
SILVER: 2 week placement in an independent production company + £200
to cover expenses.
BRONZE: 1 week placement in an independent production company + £100
to cover expenses.
