Managing collections? Here's a great introduction to collections care
On 18 February Creating Capacity is running:
Stop the rot: A guide to preventing decay in collections
How and why do objects in your collections decay? What can be done to
prevent it? This course is designed to answer these questions and give you:
o An understanding of the basics of collections care
o The ability to identify materials and the elements of decay
o An understanding of the damage caused by pest, light, humidity
and contaminants in collections
o An understanding of preventative measures
o An awareness of best practice regarding storage and handling of
objects
This course will provide delegates with an introduction to collections care
and the elements that cause collections to decay; and what can be done to
prevent future damage. Jane Thompson-Webb, Head of Collection Services at
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, is running this interactive and enjoyable
session. It's for staff and volunteers in museums, libraries, archives, and
galleries wishing to know about how and why objects in their collections
decay and what can be done to prevent it.
Price: £120 + VAT per delegate. Cost includes all papers, lunch and
refreshments and three months post-course support.
Venue: 44 Portland Place, London W1B 1NE
Recent participants in Creating Capacity courses have said,
'The tools from the course will be so useful in meeting the challenges of
the upcoming restructure' and 'the course was very good, with a friendly and
approachable trainer. Thank you.'
If this course isn't for you, do look have a look at what else is planned
for this month in our website. Interested? Then book online or call me on
07985 659425 for more information.
If you would like to develop the team in a way that's really focused on your
organisation's needs then consider our in-house training packages too. It's
a good way to go when training, travel and subsistence budgets are reduced.

Lucy Auger
